Using Grinding to Sharpen Woodworking Tools
Grinding is the first step most people use to sharpen woodworking tools for their woodworking plans. It is an effective method, especially for tools that has been abused or chipped to grind the faces. With grinding, material is removed fast but regarded as an important step to even out the faces of damaged tools.
As a rule, three tools are used to grind. The bench grinder is the most popular, followed by the wet grinder and even a belt sander is used to grind woodworking tools.
You simply need to hold the face of the tool level against the plane of the grinder in the same way as you would normally use the tool. Never grind across the face.
Make sure while sharpening the tool on the grinder that the tool does not get too hot. Too much heat will cause the tool to lose it’s hardness and to keep it’s perimeter while in use. To prevent overheating, dip the tool in water every 3 to 4 seconds while grinding with short bursts.
